VICE travels to Odate Kosaka in Akita Prefecture to head deeper into the rugged landscapes of Japan’s north. We start by taking a peculiar bike ride along a repurposed railway track that winds through misty forests and woods before celebrating with a steaming bowl of kirtanpo nabe, a local delicacy unique to the Akita area. After sampling a recipe that’s been handed down through three generations, we head to Zao Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture to take on its steep hiking trails.
