Hot Pot and Volcanoes in Japan’s North

VICE travels to Odate Kosaka in Akita Prefecture to head deeper into the rugged landscapes of Japan’s north. We start by taking a peculiar bike ride along a repurposed railway track that winds through misty forests and woods before celebrating with a steaming bowl of kirtanpo nabe, a local delicacy unique to the Akita area. After sampling a recipe that’s been handed down through three generations, we head to Zao Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture to take on its steep hiking trails. Atop Mt Zao, we find Okama Crater—an otherworldly landscape stemming from a dormant volcano.
