In part 2 of his deep dive on the history of Star Trek, Devin focuses on the relationships between the franchise’s key characters — specifically the Kirk-Spock-McCoy dynamic, as well as Shatner’s fighting style and lusty persona. Devin also explores Nimoy’s immense contribution to the Spock character and his reappearance in the new reboot.

The emotional center of Star Trek, according to Devin, is in fact Spock. Devin also discusses the racial integration of the Enterprise, which characterized creator Gene Roddenberry’s projection of a Utopian future. He also examines the enormous moment where Kirk and Uhura kiss — the first interracial kiss in television history. Finally, Devin examines the high-quality science-fiction writing that occurred on the original series, as well as the variety of villains — specifically Klingons, Romulans, and the Khan character portrayed so vividly by Ricardo Montalban.
