After Chekov, Scotty and Harriman visit the remains of deck 15, they return to the bridge where Demora Sulu reports that a complete scan of the ship and the surrounding area cannot find Kirk. Chekov sobs to Scotty that he never expected it [Kirk’s life] to end like this to which Scotty replies “all things must end.” Harriman breaks the silence by ordering the ship home. The original opening to the movie was not just the simply champagne bottle tumbling through space as seen in the theatrical release. Originally, the bottle would have been inter-cut with shots of Chekov and Scotty looking for something in the sky. As the scene progresses, we learn that they are looking for Captain Kirk who is orbital skydiving. When he lands, Chekov reminds him that the three of them are scheduled to attend the christening ceremony for the Enterprise-B the day after, to which Kirk replies, he’s not attending. The champagne bottle smashes against the ship and the movie progresses as normal with all three in attendance. This scene is also available on the Special Edition DVD....
