Red Bull X-Alps 2011: Race On! Today 30 adventure athletes set out from Salzburg on the race of their lives: the Red Bull X-Alps. At 11:30 they burst out of Mozartplatz in the city’s center. Their ultimate goal is Monaco, 864 km away, but ahead of them they face Europe’s harshest mountain terrain and extreme alpine weather conditions. Rules state they must cross the entire Alpine chain by foot or paraglider. Their route takes them through five countries and past eight turnpoints including many of Europe’s most famous peaks. To the cheers of hundreds of spectators, the athletes ran through Salzburg and up the Gaisberg.

Choosing the Racers – Red Bull X-Alps 2011

The Red Bull X-Alps is a unique event. In July 2011, the 5th X-Alps challenge will commence. 32 international athletes from 23 different countries will compete in a 24 / 7 race all the way from Salzburg to Monaco, covering a grueling 864 kilometers. In the selection process X-Alps mastermind Hannes Arch, head of organisation Ulrich Grill, race director Christoph Weber and communication manager Nick Warren face the difficult task choosing just 32 athletes.
