كشفت الباحثة الأمريكية راشل ماركوالد, العاملة في معمل النوم وعلم الأحياء بجامعة “كولورادو”, وفريقها أن نقص النوم يؤدي إلى البدانه والإقبال على تناول الطعام خاصة المواد السكرية لدى الشباب والاطفال الذين ينامون أقل من سبع ساعات في اليوم.
وأجريت التجارب على مجموعة من المتطوعين عددهم 16 رجلا وامرأة ومتوسط أعمارهم 22 عاما, إلى جانب مراقبة حالات أكثر من 9 آلاف تلميذ, وتم وضع مجموعة البحث في حجرة تحت المراقبة لتحديد استهلاك كل فرد للطاقة, عن طريق قياس تبادل الغازات أي استهلاك الأوكسجين وإنتاج ثاني أكسيد الكربون, ومراقبة البيئة المحيطة بهم من ضوء وضوضاء لمدة أسبوعين.
وأظهرت المتابعة إقبال مجموعة البحث على تناول كميات كبيرة من الطعام بطريقة غير محددة مثل الفاكهة والزبادي والمثلجات والشيبسى, وزيادة إفراز هرمونات فتح الشهية لديهم.
