In Part 1, Devin dives deep, exploring the original Star Trek pilots, from the mid-60’s , and examines the ratings-trouble plaguing the original sries, which resulted in only three seasons. Though the show prospered in syndication, and Trek conventions were beginning to pop up, the franchise got a serious boost in the mid-70’s when Star Wars exploded on the big screen, triggering renewed interested in science fiction films.
This resulted in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, it’s more successful sequel, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (which resurrected Ricardo Maltoban’s villain from the original series), through Treks III, IV & V, VI.
In 2009, Paramount came back to Trek, bringing in J.J. Abrams, who breathed new life into the franchise, and continues to bring creator Gene Roddenberry’s original vison back into the national consciousness.
