Why do we sleep? | Russell Foster

Russell Foster is a circadian neuroscientist: He studies the sleep cycles of the brain. And he asks: What do we know about sleep? Not a lot, it turns out, for something we do with one-third of our lives. In this talk, Foster shares three popular theories about why we sleep, busts some myths about how much sleep we need at different ages — and hints at some bold new uses of sleep as a predictor of mental health.

Belarus-born Victoria Azarenka, the #2 ranked women’s tennis player in the world, is featured on the cover of the September edition of The Red Bulletin. During a recent, all-access trip to her hometown of Minsk, The Red Bulletin caught a glimpse of the people and places that have shaped Azarenka into the fiery and passionate player she is today.

The two-time defending Australian Open champion allowed the magazine to see the tennis center where she learned to play the game, and introduced us to her first coach. Azarenka also showed her lighter side by inviting the magazine to her favorite restaurant in Minsk, and to her go-to Karaoke spot where she showed off her vocals.

Azarenka will be playing at the US Open of Tennis in Flushing, NY, which starts on Aug. 26.
