TIL: Nuclear Waste Could Power the World for 72 Years

National Geographic Emerging Explorer Leslie Dewan is helping to revolutionize the nuclear power industry by designing a safer, more efficient alternative to today’s reactors.

Conventional nuclear reactors only use about 3 to 4 percent of uranium’s accessible energy. The energy left behind is what makes conventional nuclear waste—radioactive for hundreds of thousands of years—so dangerous. Extracting more of the available energy reduces the radioactive lifetime of the waste. To this end, Dewan is helping to develop techniques that extract 96 percent of the available energy.

Day 2 of 2015 SEMA Week Powered by Nissan is all about Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with Motor Trend and The J-Turn host, Jessi Lang. Over the last decade, OEM representation at the show has steadily increased, and for good reason, as SEMA not only lends insight into the trends that drive demand, but also serves as an anything-goes playground where OEMs can connect with the aftermarket, and let loose. Jessi walks the floor in search of the coolest OEM pieces, checking a new performance package for the Nissan GTR Nismo. Then she heads outside for a ride along that would make any car enthusiast jealous, shotgun in a Roush Mustang with Justin Pawlak at the wheel. After a few hours of walking around the convention, Jessi meets up with her co-hosts for her day’s challenge. At the Las Vegas Motor Sports park she has arranged a timed race with a new Nissan 370Z Nismo.

Its a race for bragging rights!

2015 SEMA Week Powered by Nissan begins on Monday, November 30 on the Motor Trend Channel, with a whole week of videos dedicated to bringing you an exclusive inside look at SEMA, the premier automotive specialty products trade event in the world.

SEMA Week Powered by Nissan culminates on Friday December 4th with a War of the Worlds grudge match. Each host will leave SEMA and travel to an airstrip in the California desert with a hand picked vehicle from their respective market which they will line up for one epic head-to-head drag race for ultimate bragging rights!
