The Vegan Ironman Diet of Cro-Mags’ John Joseph

John Joseph is a very well-known figure in both the hardcore punk and vegan communities. As lead singer of legendary New York hardcore band Cro-Mags, he’s used his status and platform to spread the word about the benefits of plant-based diets and PMA (positive mental attitude).

What not a lot of people know about John is that on top of being an active touring musician and author, he also competes in the Ironman triathlons. These brutal tests of endurance consist of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run. To say a lot of training and diet go into competing and finishing an Ironman would be an understatement.

We follow John as he prepares for an event in Boulder, CO to see what fuels a plant-based endurance athlete under such intense training.

Chef’s Night Out: Robert Bohr

While working in his way through law school in restaurants, the dean of Robert Bohr’s program took notice of his passion for working with wine and the service industry and advised him to quit school and pursue what he really loved. Fast-forward some years later and a few stints as a sommelier at some of New York City’s finest restaurants, and Mr. Bohr now runs his own restaurant—Charlie Bird—in SoHo and is one of the most well-respected figures in the wine world.

We tagged along for a night out with Mr. Bohr and some of his buddies to see what a group of sommeliers eat and drink on a night out. The first stop was NoMad in the Flatiron for some decadent food to match an impressive wine list. For the occasion, Thomas Pastuzak, wine director at NoMad and good friend of Robert, broke out what Mr. Bohr refers to as the “Unicorn Wine.”

We then head to Brooklyn to meet up with Daniel Kessler at his restaurant Bergen Hill for crudo, cocktails, and white wine. Daniel joins as the guys head around the corner for pizza at Lucali and wine from Robert’s secret stash that owner Mark Iacono let’s him keep there. (Mark drives a beautiful classic Cadillac convertible, so naturally, they decide to drive back to Charlie Bird for the final meal of the evening.)

Back at Charlie Bird, head chef Ryan Hardy is hard at work cooking up a feast of Tuscan fried chicken, tortellini, and oysters. To accompany the meal, Robert caps the night by pouring some of his favorite off-menu wines for his favorite people.

Quebec’s Forbidden Spirits: Al-Kee-Hol

Simon Coutu and Ogden Ridjanovic go on an all-day bender in regional Quebec to find out why it’s so difficult to purchase locally crafted spirits.

Other than the few proposed bills currently gathering dust on the shelf, no real effort is being made to amend the 100-year-old law and allow micro-distilleries to sell their products on site. And it’s not so easy for these artisans to put pressure on the government.

Simon and Ogden meet with distillers, taste their products, and try to get a sense of what Quebec would have to offer should legislation change: a ton of great whiskey, gin, and even absinthe.

MUNCHIES Presents: Lobster Luke

Luke Sandburg—a.k.a. “Lobster Luke”—is a friend everyone wants to have. Instead of paying nearly $40 per pound for California spiny lobster, he braves the dark waters off the coast of Venice, California, and catches those bad boys himself. We tagged along for a night dive and, along with some of Luke’s buddies, got to enjoy the succulent fruits of his labor.
