MUNCHIES Guide to Bohemia: Happy Meat

In Bohemian food culture only one thing can rival beer in terms of popularity and importance: meat. Michaela Jörgensen, co-owner of “The Real Meat Society,” has made it her mission to educate the Czech meat-loving public about responsible and sustainable meat consumption. We accompany her to Bohemia’s largest organic pig farm, where Hannah is soon involved in a chaotic pig hunt.
At “Cestr,” meat quality is held in the highest regard. The restaurant’s chef shows Hannah how to prepare a dry-aged steak.

MUNCHIES Guide to Bohemia: Beer Makes Beautiful Bodies

Beer is arguably Bohemia’s most important contribution to world culture. Birthplace of pilsner beer, Czech breweries are known for perfecting the art of brewing beer. Hannah travels to the village of Unetice and meets up with Vladimir, a master brewer. She learns about the brewing process and then gets to take a look at the brewery’s kitchen, where the beer is used as a popular ingredient.

Hannah then goes back to Prague and meets up with the self-proclaimed “beer philosopher” Max Bannson. He tells her about his personal beer philosophy and the importance of beer in Czech society.

MUNCHIES Guide to Bohemia: Death by Christmas Carp

We drive to a small Bohemian village to witness an old Czech tradition: carp fishing. Every autumn, villagers all over Bohemia get up in the middle of the night and start draining the local carp pond. Hannah tries her best to assist in some way, but finds this rather difficult. After carrying her freshly caught carp back to Prague, Hannah and her friend Mikulas prepare a traditional carp Christmas meal.

MUNCHIES Guide to Bohemia: Drinking Like a Bohemian

This episode is all about Bohemian drinking culture. First, we visit a family-run distillery, where the nation’s favorite spirit, Slivovice, is produced. After sampling a few too many of these, Hannah is eager to learn more about Czech drunk food. She visits “Maso a Kobliha” for a donut and a lesson in sausage making. At the end of the night, Hannah visits “The Tavern,” where American expat Dean has playfully combined traditional burgers with Czech ingredients.
