There’s nothing in gaming quite like a console war. While the name makes it sound like an intense battle between console makers, it turns out that it’s just a term to refer to a popularity contest. Why is it called a war? Well, that’s because Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are usually fighting for the same prize: market share dominance. But lately, things have changed. Nintendo is kind of doing their own thing and the corner while Sony and Microsoft hash it out, but they’re not hashing it out because they’re not fighting for the same prize. Sony wants to continue their dominance and Microsoft just wants to get back in contention. The console wars as we know them are finished.

Just think of cross-play, for example. Cross-play is great and should be a feature all games have, but it also took away some of the mystery in gaming. Call of Duty players on Xbox used to always talk about how they were better than PlayStation gamers, but now that everyone’s playing with everyone, the whole discussion is pointless. If you take a look at the Xbox Series S, the console itself shows Microsoft’s cards. It’s cheaper than anything Sony is offering because Microsoft wants PS5 gamers to consider buying a Series S as well and become a part of their ecosystem.

There’s more to this console battle than just that so enjoy the video, let me know whether you think the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S will come out on top as the best ninth-generation console and don’t forget to subscribe to TheGamer for more gaming content.
