Nintendo is a strange video game console manufacturer and game developer, because in many senses for many decades Nintendo has not bothered to compete with the other major players in the industry. Particularly over the course of the last two decades and the rise of the PlayStation and the Xbox, Nintendo has not evolved in tandem with these companies or even in relation to them. In fact, Nintendo has consistently made choices that separate themselves from the pack, moving in totally different directions and targeting totally different segments of the market. In short, Nintendo isn’t trying to make a guy who wants an Xbox consider a Nintendo console, Nintendo just wants to sell Nintendo games and consoles to whoever finds them appealing. This may sound like common sense, but on the open market this is something of a marvel. Today we’re going to take a look at how and why Nintendo doesn’t compete with Microsoft and Sony and think about what that might mean for the future.
