Why Bad Graphics Are So Popular

With the rise of indie developers over the years, one of the burning questions in the video game industry has to be: how much do graphics matter? With so many different games in so many different art styles, it’s a very legitimate question. We have AAA studios making these large scale games with hyper-realistic graphics while indie developers seem to still be stuck in the ‘80s with their pixel graphics. Games with subpar graphics – like Minecraft, Valheim and Roblox – are so popular and a lot of gamers just don’t understand why. Well, it turns out that graphics don’t matter as much as you probably think they do. The gameplay experience will always trump graphics.

Good graphics most certainly enhance the gaming experience, but they don’t make the experience good on its own. If a game has good graphics and everything else isn’t great, it’s definitely not considered a good game. The graphics simply add to the atmosphere of a game. The story, character development, replay value, gameplay, controls and accessibility features are all more important aspects of a video game than it’s graphics. They all have to work in unison for a game to be good. If the balance between all of these aspects is found, then good graphics is just a plus.

There’s more to whether or not graphics matter than just that so enjoy the video, let me know how important you think graphics are in the comments section below and don’t forget to subscribe to TheGamer for more gaming content.
