Nintendo has been one of the foundations of the video game industry since the beginning. From arcade machines that gobbled millions of quarters in the 1980s, to handheld systems that put the most powerful and exciting games into players’ pockets, Nintendo has been a leader in video game technology.

While the Japanese tech giant made its name in recent decades, the company itself has been around since the late 19th Century. Nintendo got its start as a gaming company, but for a different kind of portable gaming. The company also published highly successful card games more than a century before “Pokemon”.

However, the long story of Nintendo was not always one filled with success. A leadership change, a devastating world war, economic downturns, and ill-advised attempts at diversification left the company in dire straits before the video game revolution gave it another chance.

In today’s video, we’re going to look at the history of Nintendo, from playing card publisher to video game titan, and all the ups and downs in between.
