Lara Croft is one of the most iconic female characters in gaming history. Both men and women alike easily recognize her character for her good looks and her wits, but it seems her appearance in game is constantly changing and being upgraded with the times and graphics of games.

We’ve had the opportunity to track the Tomb Raider series for over twenty years and we’ve been extremely impressed with what we’ve seen.

Of course, there are certain mishaps which were quickly created like the 1996 block version of Lara Croft who in no way resembled her promotional model. We had to give the designers a break though because 3D character design was a fairly new concept and they were working with a very bare bones engine to make such a remarkable game!

We’re going to fast forward a few years where Core Design was part of the game design team because, by the end of it, you could just feel the burn out. When they were done, they had produced a new Tomb Raider game every year for an astounding five years straight and it was time to pass the reins over to a new team.

Crystal Dynamics came to the rescue in 2006 and basically saved the franchise from doom. Things had become so bad, movie companies were blaming the bad games for lackluster box office sales so they came in the nick of time to save one of our favorite gaming franchises. And we can’t thank Square Enix enough for bringing the best version of Lara Croft to us. A version so realistic, it’s basically burned into our retinas forever.

So let’s check out how Lara Croft has evolved over the last twenty years.
