Every week, groups of aging New Zealanders are gathering together for a rather unusual hobby: building their own coffins. While it may sound macabre, these DIY “coffin clubs” allow for seniors to cope with death and loss while bringing some fun and personality to their own final journey. Through the process of building and decorating “underground furniture,” members find camaraderie while also minimizing the stress and cost of funerals. Filmmaker Briar March tells story of the Coffin Club through song and dance in this charming docu-musical.
