A 15-century stone mausoleum, weighing 1,100 tons, traveled over a mile in almost 4 hours with the aid of a concrete platform and 191 wheels. The original site of the Zeynel Bey tomb is in the ancient town of Hasankeyf in the Batman province in Turkey. The tomb and other historical structures are part of a relocation plan to make way for the a hyrdroelectric dam that will submerge Hasankeyf once it becomes operational. Though some opposed the structure’s relocation, citing concerns that the tomb would sustain damage, proponents argued that the move was made in the interest of cultural preservation.
