This is the Illimani glacier in Bolivia where the team recovered two cores, each more than 400 feet long. They hope to create the first world library of archived glacier ice, called the Ice Memory project. After drilling, the cores are broken into chunks and sent to Antarctica for studying and preservation. The cores provide valuable data on air temperature history, wind patterns, ice sheet history, and more. Scientists hope this data will help predict future changes in the environment.
