Concentrated solar energy can reach temperatures in excess of 2000ºF, and produce UV radiation that could damage eyes. Glass bottles should not be exposed to these extreme heat/pressure conditions as they pose risk of serious cuts and injury upon failure of the container.

For this demonstration, I used the “Solar Scorcher” made in a previous project (http://youtu.be/XFw7U7V1Hok) to focus concentrated sunlight on a glass bottle of soda.

I used dark soda because it absorbs the energy faster.

I realized the pressure would rise quickly in the bottle, and I made sure I was at least 30 feet away during the demonstration, for safety.

My guess was that the bottle top would shoot off at high speed. But what actually happened took me by surprise, and took me 2 days to clean up the yard.
