The two new consoles will be released into a time where the future of gaming is uncertain. Will having your own hardware in your own house seems stupid two years down the line? Will it just be more clutter in your living room? Or will consoles stay relevant?
It seems like even Sony and Microsoft are on the fence about these questions, working on new, better-than-ever consoles while at the same time developing streaming services that promise to make those consoles obsolete.
Microsoft may have the right idea in buying up production studios. It’s kind of like what Netflix did by producing its own original content. Even if game streaming reaches a point, in the next few years, where its latency and resolution can compete with consoles, they’ll at least still be the ones making the games. Will the XBOX Series X be able to handle the transition or will the playstation come out on top for the second generation in a row?
