Mysterious Purple Blob Surprises Scientists | National Geographic

An unidentified purple creature living in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California caught the close attention of researchers aboard the exploration vessel Nautilus, who watched a live feed from their underwater remotely operated vehicle. Based on the color and location of the animal, which the team identified as a kind of sea slug, the moment may represent the discovery of a new species. The Nautilus is on a four-month expedition for the Ocean Exploration Trust, a research and educational nonprofit founded by National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Robert Ballard.
