Happy 80th Birthday to Ocean Guardian Sylvia Earle | National Geographic

Beloved ocean explorer and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Sylvia Earle celebrates her 80th birthday on August 30, 2015. National Geographic gets the party started by celebrating some of her amazing achievements. Among her credits: She set a world record for the deepest untethered dive, at 1,250 feet; she’s logged more than 7,000 hours underwater on more than a thousand expeditions; she served as the first female chief scientist in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s history; and she was lauded as a Champion of the Earth, the United Nations’ top environmental award. Plus, she’s just plain cool. Happy birthday, Sylvia! Thank you for inspiring generations of explorers.
