Game development is a complicated process, and there’s so much that can end up cut or half-finished and then forgotten about, while gamers are left to puzzle it all out on their own time. The hunt for secrets in games has built entire communities, though, and many developers are more than happy to provide them in their games.

Granted, there are more than a few mysteries in all of gaming’s history, but as games become more elaborate, so too do their mysteries. The first easter eggs, after all, were as simple as a ‘this game was created by whoever’ line of text, and they’ve become much more complicated since. No longer is the greatest scandal in video games how an ancient, terrible movie tie-in game (We’re looking at you, E.T.) was buried under the earth as opposed to becoming a major embarrassment.
