Shipwreck From Explorer Vasco da Gama’s Fleet Discovered | National Geographic

After 18 years of research, excavations and archaeological analysis, National Geographic grantee David Mearns has successfully discovered one of Vasco da Gama’s ships lost at sea in 1503 off the coast of present-day Oman. Together with the Oman Ministry of Heritage and Culture and over 50 crew members they found thousands of artifacts including gold coins, cannonballs, ceramics, and a ship’s bell that helped them confirm the age and provenance of the ship.

Eating the Invasive “Frankenfish” to Stop Its Spread | National Geographic

Catch them and eat them? Invasive northern snakeheads first appeared in the United States around 2002. The snakehead’s peculiar looks have prompted people to dub it the Frankenfish, and some scientists worry that it could create big problems for native fish species. To combat its rapid spread, U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials recommend complete removal—and consumption.
