Dee Dee is a Northern Thai Street Food truck located in Austin, Texas started by Lakana and Justin Trubiana. Their menu consists of items like pad kaprow (stir fried pork with fried Thai basil and fried egg), som tom (papaya salad), and gai yang (Thai roast chicken). You won’t be finding any pad thai or fried rice at Dee Dee, as all of their recipes are Northern specialties from Lakana’s home region of Isan.

Lakana and Justin met by chance in Thailand, fell in love, and ultimately moved to Austin, Texas and started Dee Dee. They use Northern Thai ingredients like chili paste, fish sauce, lemongrass, kaffir lime, and holy basil in their dishes. The result is Lakana and Justin’s unforgettable Thai comfort food, where you can taste the love in each bite.

Edan Leshnick of Breads Bakery in NYC makes decadent chocolate babka in the Munchies Test Kitchen. Edan starts with the dough, made with whole milk, eggs, sugar, salt, vanilla, butter, yeast, and two kinds of flour. The mixture is blended slowly in a stand-up mixer to form the babka’s stretchy gluten texture.

After letting the it rest, Edan rolls the dough into a long, thin sheet, spreads on a layer of Nutella, and sprinkles in chocolate chips. Then, Edan rolls the dough tightly into a roulade to create lots of layers. After cutting his roulade in half, he braids the dough into its famous babka shape, places it into molds, and bakes. Finally, when the babkas come out of the oven, he covers the crust with his simple syrup resulting in a sweet, caramelized treat you won’t want to share.

Jose Luis Perez Mendez, better known as El Primo, is king of breakfast tacos in Austin, TX. He’s been selling street tacos for over 14 years in Austin. He sells chorizo, ham, migas and bean and cheese breakfast tacos as well as traditional carne asada, al pastor and barbacaoa street tacos to his clientele in South Austin.

Jose, who came from Michoacan Mexico 28 years ago to make a living in America, describes working at his father’s butcher shop as a kid and how his childhood built his strong work ethic. Jose shares his humor and his love of the United States, and his customers talk about why it’s hard to find a better breakfast taco than El Primo’s.
