VIDEO GAME RIP OFFS. No game is wholly original. Everything new takes at least something from existing games, but some games do more than borrow. Some games outright steal. The thing is, every so often, a total rip off ends up being better than the original.

It’s tough to be original, especially in video games. You have to come up with an idea that’s never been done before and you have to make sure it’s fun to play. Frankly, this almost never happens. Every game owes at least a small debt to some other game.
But every once in a while, a game that shamelessly rips off another game turns out better than the game it ripped off. Take Red Dead Redemption. In no possible universe would this game exist if it weren’t for the Grand Theft Auto series. It just wouldn’t happen, but thanks to its touching story and Wild West vibe, it’s arguably a better game. The Witcher 3 couldn’t possibly exist without The Elder Scrolls series. Games like Oblivion and Skyrim paved the way for The Witcher 3, but The Witcher 3 triumphs in many areas The Elder Scrolls games don’t.
You might have heard of the so-called Metroidvania genre. What we’re really talking about there is the Metroid genre because Castlevania: Symphony of the Night blatantly ripped off Super Metroid. The thing is, SotN did it better. And we don’t know if you can steal from yourself, but thanks to a strange set of circumstances, it seems to have happened in the case of Rock Band. Harmonix made the Guitar Hero series, but then got bought by MTV Games. It couldn’t make Guitar Hero games anymore, so it one-upped Guitar Hero by making Rock Band. As for the last video game rip off that was better than the original, well that’s for you to find out. The story behind this timeless classic is one you probably haven’t heard before.
