A Super-Earth: First detection of its Atmosphere

The planet 55 Cancri e is a “Super-Earth” with a mass of eight Earth masses. It is unusual for a super-Earth because its orbit is very close to its parent star.

Now an international team has observed the planet with NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and detected gasses in the atmosphere of the planet its.

It has a dry atmosphere mostly consisting of hydrogen and helium. Find out how the researchers studied the planet and what other unusual features the planet has.
