The Happytime Murders finally arrived in theatres, and the response to the movie has been seriously mixed. While some absolutely detest it, some fans are there to defend it. Directed by the son of the great Jim Henson, The Happytime Murders set out to make a movie that would destroy your expectations of the cute and totally innocent puppets and muppets you once thought you knew. With a stellar cast and a great idea, fans and critics everywhere have been left to wonder what exactly went wrong? Some of the reasons seem to make sense, and others are downright confusing! From Melissa McCarthy’s Connie being totally addicted to sugar as if it’s cocaine, and not the usual way we’re addicted to sugar, to the crazy fact that her character has undergone a puppet liver transplant and is somehow still alive! It starts out as a classic film noir, like it’s predecessor Roger Rabbit, but quickly changes into something else entirely, but what it changes into, no one really knows! A recurring joke about Melissa McCarthy being mistaken for a man makes pretty much no sense at all, and a heavy handed allegory for racism in America doesn’t really play as well as maybe it was intended to. The relationship between Connie and Phil is extremely strained and there isn’t enough of an explanation why, and Phil is declared innocent at the end despite it totally seeming like he had something to do with the murders. Sandra’s entire plan for revenge seems like it is way more complicated, and the whole thing just had so much more potential!
