We’ve all heard crazy stories about how directors manipulate their actors into a good performance. Anything to get the shot, right? There are some directors who enjoy playing a good gag on their actors, while others definitely take it too far.
In “The Usual Suspects”, Bryan Singer had a good time with his famous cast. While Benicio Del Toro made people laugh with some unexpected farts and more. As for “Fight Club” David Fincher gave Edward Norton a painful direction towards Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden. We’re not sure whether Ridley Scott’s “Alien” or Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” was more terrifying? But sending Tippi Hedren to a hospital is not cool. The wonderfully remembered Alan Rickman got a scare in “Die Hard” as Hans Gruber, while Julia Roberts laughed beautifully next to Richard Gere in “Pretty Woman”. As for “Good Will Hunting”, Matt Damon couldn’t keep a straight face when Robin Williams shared his secret. Whereas Francis Ford Coppola practically harassed his actors each day on the set of “Apocalypse Now”, poor Dennis Hopper and Michael Sheen. What about the crazy Darth Vader suit in “Star Wars” that George Lucas tweaked? Or the scene in Nancy Meyers, “The Holiday” which surprised Kate Winslet and Jack Black!

Their takes were magnificent and kept in the film, but some of the consequences were too great to justify the director’s selfish means.
