For better or for worse, there will always be a certain amount of hype surrounding the release of new video game titles. We will always judge a game based on its trailer and what the game developers tell us, forgetting that games get delayed, or changed, or simply fall flat on what they promise us. Games get overhyped, and then we’re surprised when they don’t live up to what we thought they would be. Take, for instance, Duke Nukem Forever. The follow-up to the first game was released 15 YEARS after Duke Nukem 3D, so long that we had given up hope of ever seeing it on shelves – which, honestly, maybe the developers should have done. Then there’s Assassin’s Creed Unity, which wasn’t majorly delayed in any way, but was just a game that lacked any significant draw when it made its way to our consoles and PCs. No Man’s Sky was the talk of the town for months – and then, even though there were “so many of [us] playing,” it turned out to be nothing more than empty space. Aliens: Colonial Marines failed to capture the same suspenseful and terrifying feel of the films on which they were based, instead giving us idiotic aliens and a few easter eggs that weren’t worth our time. Pokemon Go became a major part of the culture for a few months, then faded back into relative obscurity like so many memes gone before it. Daikatana is well-known for being the biggest flop in gaming history – second perhaps only to E.T., which was so bad it ruined Atari and ended in a secret cover-up in the middle of the desert. Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) was a game that literally thought it might be a good idea to slow down the world’s fastest hedgehog. Mighty No. 9, which was supposed to be a spiritual sequel to the much-beloved Mega Man series, was instead a soul-crushing letdown. And Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II was a sequel that, quite simply, didn’t need to exist. All of these games hyped us up only to leave us crashing down, frustrated and sad that our gaming dreams turned out to be console and PC nightmares.
