The Olympic games have been popular since ancient Greece, hence the name. Of course, a lot has changed since 776 BC. Nevertheless, athletes have been trying their hand at winning the Olympic Games for ages and for good reason; it proves one’s physical fitness and skill. It’s the ultimate feat of strength and coordination. To top it off, winners these days get a gold medal.

So it makes perfect sense that game developers would want to create Olympic themed games. After all, there’s already an entire franchise dedicated to one sport in the form of the Madden series. With the popularity of the Olympic games it’s basically guaranteed cash for the game developers especially if they manage to pitch these sports themed games to children. We’re looking at you, Mario and Sonic. There are plenty of Olympic themed video games on the market, both officially licensed and unofficially licensed.

However, most of these Olympic games are terrible. It shows in the graphics, the gameplay mechanics, and the marketing. Believe it or not, corporate tie-ins usually aren’t very popular. Why? Well, most gamers are already aware of what makes a good, quality game. Tie-ins usually stink of desperation and cash grabs on the part of game developers. There usually isn’t a lot of thought or effort put into these games and it shows. Typically, tie-in games feel cheap and are far from entertaining. If you happened to find a good Olympics game, let us know. We’d love to hear about it!
