Remarkable Time-Lapse: Watch Caterpillars Transform Into Butterflies | National Geographic

This footage offers a fascinating glimpse of how caterpillars change into butterflies. Graduate student Aaron Pomerantz created a window by making a small incision into the side of a caterpillar and removing a few cells that would form the forewing in a butterfly. Then, he captured time-lapse video of the metamorphosis that revealed the structural color formation of the butterfly’s wing. Despite losing their forewings, the butterflies can still fly with only three wings.
