This is the new Maserati GranTurismo Folgore, and it’s a Maserati grand tourer like no other, because it’s fully electric.

Yup, the GranTurismo coupe is back, and it looks as glorious as ever it did. It’ll be available with a V6 in two states of tune or, intriguingly, as here, with three electric motors. And between them they make quite a lot of power.

The GranTurismo Folgore’s peak power output is some 751bhp, which is enough to take this 2260kg kerbweight Maserati from 0-62mph in 2.7sec and give it a 199mph top speed.

The battery is big: the Folgore has an 83kWh usable battery, which can charge at up to 270kW. Range is predicted to be 280 miles or thereabouts when the car goes on sale late summer 2023. In the UK, the Folgore will cost close to £200,000.

This is a Marshall Class S steam road roller – steamroller, steamroll, as you prefer – and of all the machines we’ve tested this year, this is one of the most joyful to drive.

And that’s despite the fact that at 12.75 tonnes and 5bhp (but quite a lot more torque) it’s rather slow. Let’s call it 4mph so, if you’re a mile or two from the shop, best set off mid-morning to get there for lunchtime.

Marshalls of Gainsborough made all kinds of machinery – wheeled tractors, tracked machines, even tea packing equipment. But this steam road roller had an extraordinarily long service life. It was made in 1925 but was still owned and used by Lincolnshire council to flatten roads until the mid-1950s. They were made until the late 1940s in the UK, and until the mid-50s in India.

This one was bought in 1964 for £300. Today they’re worth about £50,000. They take up an awful lot of space, and even more looking after, but are a delight to look at, be around – and, yes, drive. Join us for 2022’s slowest road test.

When the new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance was announced earlier this year, many were slightly shocked. There’s no sign of the powerful V8s that used to define the car, both in naturally aspirated and turbocharged form, replaced by a four-cylinder hybridised powertrain. Surely this isn’t befitting for Affalterbach’s most well-known muscle car?

Well, the electronically turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder under the bonnet is something of a feat of engineering – with 469bhp, it’s the most powerful four-pot ever fitted to a production car. There’s also a 201bhp electric motor that delivers power straight to the rear wheels, meaning that this super saloon has a total combined power output of 671bhp. However, all that added technology means that it’s put on a bit of weight – it tips the scales at a whopping 2.1 tonnes.

So, it’s fast, but is it as characterful as its predecessors? Join Matt Saunders as he takes to both the road and the track to find out.
