Lamborghini Huracán STO 2021 review | Track special supercar driven | Autocar

This is the 2021 Lamborghini Huracán STO. STO stands for Super Trofeo Omolagata (Italian for homologation), as a fair amount of its go-faster technology in it is drawn from the car used in Lamborghini’s Super Trofeo one-make racing series.

The STO’s engine is probably the least changed thing about it. This is Lamborghini’s long-serving naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10, making the same 631bhp peak power that it did in the Huracán Performante.

It is, however, rear-wheel drive only, and with a raft of other weight-saving measures it comes in at just 1339kg (dry), which is 43kg less than the Huracán Performante.

Performance is electrifying. There’s a full list of its figures below but on track our correspondent Mike Duff frequently saw cornering forces of 1.2g. At a price, is the fastest, most exciting Huracán ever made.

Technical Specification: Lamborghini Huracán STO
Price: £268,000
Engine: V10, 5204cc, petrol
Transmission: 7-spd dual-clutch automatic
Driveline layout: Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive
Power 631bhp at 8000rpm
Torque 416lb ft at 6500rpm
0-62mph 3.0sec
Top speed 193mph
Kerb weight 1339kg ‘dry’
Fuel economy 16.9mpg
CO2 331g/km

Will a Toyota GR Yaris drift? | 4wd hot hatchback Will It Drift? special, part 4 | Autocar

Welcome to the fourth in a series of videos set to answer the crucial question: will it drift?

We have four 4wd hot hatchbacks – the new 2021 Volkswagen Golf R, the latest Mercedes-AMG A45 S, the Toyota GR Yaris and a Mk3 Ford Focus RS. And we’re taking them all to a low-grip skidpan to answer that most vital of questions. Will they go sideways?

Then we have a two-wheel drive not-exactly-conventional-hatchback, too. The Renault Clio V6.

This time it’s the Toyota GR Yaris. It has Toyota’s own four-wheel drive system with a torque sensing (Torsen) differential at the front, an electro mechanical clutch in the middle, and another limited-slip Torsen differential at the back. The rear axle can take anything up to 70% of overall system torque and is even geared 1% faster than the front axle. Will that be enough on this very low grip, very slow, Thruxton skid pan, though? Or will it take the handbrake to help?

This series complements a written Autocar feature about torque vectoring, that includes full technical details and interviews with the engineers behind these cars. We’ll update this description when it goes online – but for now, don’t forget you ca pick up the magazine in all good newsagents and via digital subscription.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport 45 vs Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition | Autocar Review

It’s the battle of the long names, as the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport 45, a new 2021 limited edition Golf GTI, takes on our favourite big hot hatchback of recent years, the 2020 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition.

The Golf 45 edition celebrates, as the name suggests, the GTI’s 45th anniversary. As such, this special model gets a power boost over the regular Golf GTI to 296bhp, which is good for 0-62mph in 5.6sec, and a top speed of some 166mph. The special Golf costs £39,380 in the UK.

That puts in on a par with the very rare 2020 Civic Type R Limited Edition, just 20 of which came to the UK, shorn of air conditioning and a stereo to make them lighter. It cost £39,995 and has a little more power than the Golf, at 316bhp, which gave it a 5.7sec 0-62mph time and a top speed of 169mph.

Which, though, is the nicer car to drive? Limited Golf, or Limited Civic? Our testers Richard Lane and Matt Prior take to the roads to find out.

Return of the V8 Defender! Supercharged new Land Rover Defender V8 (and PHEV) review | Autocar

The Land Rover Defender V8 is back. Until the 1990s a woofly big petrol engine was a staple in the Defender range but, barring a few special editions since, it has been largely absent from Land Rover’s most versatile vehicle.

Now, though, in this new Defender, the V8 is back. The new V8 Defender can be had in short or long wheelbase, 90 or 110, forms. And in either way, performance is strong. The V8 is a 5.0-litre supercharged unit making 518bhp and 461lb ft, which is good for 0-62mph in 4.9sec and a 149mph top speed.

What it’s less good for, perhaps unsurprisingly, is sipping only a little fuel. This is a 19.3mpg, 330g/km car. And it’s quite expensive, costing from at least £98,575.

But maybe, just maybe, the appeal of a big, lustful V8 makes it worth it?

Also included is the new Land Rover Defender PHEV review, a 110-only Defender that combines plug-in hybrid technology with a petrol engine.

Which is better?

Is anything unimproved by a V8? Join Matt Prior as he finds out.

Fast plug-in estate shootout | 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered v BMW 330e | Autocar

There’s nothing that says ‘every car you’ll ever need’ quite like a fast estate car, and here are two of the best and the newest. Which means that as well as having engines, you can plug them in.

The newest is the 2021 Peugeot 508 SW Peugeot Sport Engineered (or as we’ve come to refer to it, the Peugeot 508 PSE). It makes its performance by having a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine and small electric motor at the front, with four-wheel drive provided by an additional motor at the back.

It makes 355bhp in total, which is good for 0-62mph in 5.2 sec and a top speed of 155mph, while it has a zero-emissions range of 26 miles, officially returns 138.9mpg and has a CO2 output of 46g/km. It costs £54,000.

It meets one of the traditional players in the fast wagons sector, a BMW 330xe Touring, which costs a little less than the Peugeot, at £49,280.

The BMW has a 2.0-litre engine in the front, and that’s where you find its electric motor, too – they can work independently or together. In total, they combine to produce 289bhp, which is enough for 0-62mph in 5.9sec and a top speed of 139mph. Officially it returns 176.6mpg and produces 41g/km of CO2.

Which, though, is the most compelling to drive? Join Matt Prior and James Disdale as they test the two back to back on the road, and decide which is the more alluring proposition.

Will it drift? Ford Focus RS | 4wd hot hatchbacks part 3 | Autocar

Welcome to the third in a series of videos set to answer the crucial question: will it drift?

We have four 4wd hot hatchbacks – the new 2021 Volkswagen Golf R, the latest Mercedes-AMG A45 S, the Toyota GR Yaris and a Mk3 Ford Focus RS. And we’re taking them all to a low-grip skidpan to answer that most vital of questions. Will they go sideways?

Then we have a two-wheel drive not-exactly-conventional-hatchback, too. The Renault Clio V6.

This time it’s the third-generation Ford Focus RS. It has a funky four-wheel drive system with two clutches on its back axle that can torque vector to give one wheel or another as much or as little torque as possible. The rear axle can take anything up to 70% of overall system torque and is even geared 2% faster than the front axle. Will that be enough on this very low grip, very slow, Thruxton skid pan?

This series complements a written Autocar feature about torque vectoring, that includes full technical details and interviews with the engineers behind these cars. We’ll update this description when it goes online – but for now, don’t forget you ca pick up the magazine in all good newsagents and via digital subscription.

New Nissan Qashqai 2021 review | Britain’s most important car? | Autocar

This is the all-new, all-singing, all-dancing* (* may not sing or dance) Nissan Qashqai.

It’s the third-generation of Nissan’s genre-defining crossover/SUV/estate/family car thingy, and it is arguably Britain’s most important car, owing to it being designed, developed, and built here. It’s also perennially one of the best-selling cars in the world, with more than three million sold since its 2006 introduction.

Join James Disdale as he tests the 1.3-litre mild hybrid petrol Qashqai, which makes 156bhp, enough to propel it from 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds, while it has a top speed of 128mph.

In this DiG-T Tekna+ form its price is £34,175 in the UK.

Ferrari Portofino M 2021 review | Autocar

This is the new for 2021 Ferrari Portofino M, with M for Modificata, or, in English, Modified.

Which is pretty straightforward, really. It’s the revised, updated, facelifted, modified version of Ferrari’s softest car, the Portofino, a sports car with a folding metal roof.

The modifications are quite broad, and include a power hike to 612bhp, the fitment of an eight-, rather than seven-speed twin clutch gearbox, petrol particulate filters and revised design inside and outside.

In the UK its price is from £175,360 but you can add to that pretty quickly with some options. It’s a fast car, though, able to go from 0-62mph in just 3.45sec and on to a top speed of 199mph.

Rivals? Cars, we think, like the Aston Martin DB11 Volante and Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, or perhaps the Bentley Continental GT. Some of these will be more sporting, others more comfortable.

In that way, it’s not unlike the Ferrari Roma we tested the other week you’ll find that here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaWj-0t3xOE

How does the Portofino fare? Join Matt Prior as he finds out.
