Setting a Brands Hatch lap record! (On an electric scooter)

Have you ever wondered how long it would take to lap Brands Hatch on an e-scooter?

Well, our colleagues at Move Electric (http://www.moveelectric.com) did, as well as wanting to sete six other electric vehicles lap records, from a bicycle to a scooter (more details over at their website and YouTube channel).

They identified Autocar’s Matt Prior as the perfect man to help them out. With a quarter of a century of testing cars they decided he’d be the perfect bloke to take the helm of … a Perry EHopper P4 e-scooter. Please excuse the resultant swearing.

Driven: 819bhp Ferrari 296 GTB. Ferrari’s FANTASTIC new hybrid V6 supercar

When it comes to mid-engined supercars, Ferrari tends not to miss. And so to the Ferrari 296 GTB, reviewed here by Matt Prior.

Instead of having a V8 like Ferrari’s mid-engined supercars tend to, the 296 GTB represents a new generation of Ferrari supercar. In its middle is a 3.0-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine making 654bhp on its own, augmented by a 164bhp electric motor, bringing the total system output to 819bhp.

They drive the rear wheels through an 8-spd twin-clutch automatic gearbox and have enough power and torque (546lb ft) to propel the 296 GTB from 0-62mph in 2.9sec and on to a top speed of 205mph.

And you can plug it in. Do so and the 296 GTB can run on electric power alone for 15.5 miles, making it the … perfect city car? Well, perhaps not, but bringing unusual versatility to such a powerful supercar.

The 296 GTB costs £241,550 in the UK. Oh, and for the record, owing to the PHEV system the fuel consumption is around 44mpg and its CO2 emissions 150gkm. Until you turn up the V6 noise…

Ineos Grenadier review | Spiritual Land Rover Defender successor driven off-road | Autocar

Conceived in a London pub, inspired by the old Land Rover Defender, and built in an old Smart-car factory in France: that’s the colorful background of new Ineos Grenadier, made more colourful still by the fact that Jaguar Land Rover tried appreciably hard to ensure this car never saw the light of day.

Join Road Tester Richard Lane as he samples a prototype version of this rugged new off-roader, which is made by the recently formed Ineos Automotive to function as a spiritual successor to the old Defender. It uses a body-on-frame construction and robust, six-cylinder BMW engines, the petrol version of which – tested here – makes 281bhp and 332lb ft, channeled to all four wheels via ZF’s eight-speed automatic gearbox and electronically controlled differentials in each axle.

Prices are set to start at around £48,000 when the Grenadier goes on sale later this year, and at that point we’ll also try it on the road. For now, we have at our disposal a disused quarry, plenty of mud, and a short stint at the wheel of the latest arrival in the hardcore off-roader class.

Volkswagen ID Buzz review – VW’s Type 2 ‘Microbus’ successor driven in prototype form | Autocar

It’s taken more than half a century, and several redesigns, but Volkswagen has finally come up with a replacement for one of its most iconic and beloved ‘cars’: the 1950 Type 2 van. Some called it the VW Camper, others the Microbus, or just the Bus for short. It was made famous as an iconic part of the ‘hippy’ counter culture of the 1960s and 70. VW has promised a brand-new version as many as four times in the last two decades; but now it’s finally building one – and it’s all-electric.

The VW ID Buzz will come to the UK market in autumn 2022 – and we’ve already driven it (read our drive review here: https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/first-drive-vw-id-buzz-2022-prototype-review). It’ll launch in standard-wheelbase form and, as a passenger vehicle it’ll seat up to five occupants and be priced from somewhere above £50,000. A longer-wheelbase version, a twin-motor four-wheel drive version, a Camper version and a GTX performance derivative are all likely to come later.

Matt Saunders took to UK roads for an hour in a late-series prototype ID Buzz Cargo commercial version to get a taste of what the zero-emissions ‘lifestyle’ van of the future will be like to drive.
