Recognized as one of North America’s top 50 skiers at the turn of the millennium, Scott Gaffney is best known for his independent filmmaking and decade-long role at Matchstick Productions as codirector and editor. Gaffney lives in Lake Tahoe, where he was Shane McConkey’s roommate as they built their careers and a lifelong friendship. “We had a really unique relationship because not only were we best friends and roommates, but Shane’s place as an elite athlete and mine as a filmmaker allowed both of our careers to blossom,” Gaffney says. “To be able to share that path with your best friend was a special thing.”

NO SECOND PLACE, a Red Bull Media House six-episode production in conjunction with the America’s Cup, offers a fascinating and dramatic perspective at the world of sailing with a behind-the-scenes look at the teams competing at the 34th America´s Cup, September 7-21, 2013 in San Francisco. This documentary-style production goes inside the teams, boat designs, training regimens, rules, the speed of the sport, strategy and teamwork, among other elements.

In episode 3, The Cutting Edge, the AC72 takes center stage as the ultimate hero of the 34th America’s Cup. As a piece of engineering, it is the most highly advanced sailboat in racing, meeting the standards now of what would be possible 15-20 years forward. The AC72 should not be flying above the water at 50 mph, but that is what it’s doing.

For the first time, the America’s Cup has a boat that is actually pushing the athletes to perform at a level they didn’t have to in previous generations. These carbon fiber, titanium-strong machines are built to be as light as possible, but with the strength needed to travel at unimaginable speeds. With the size of a wing similar to that of an airplane’s, the boats are able to generate speed three times that of the wind.

Here we get to meet the teams that conceived and designed the most exciting boats ever sailed, and find out what challenges and difficulties they’ll encounter in this high-tech world.

First, Carlos heads to the test track to put the reborn 460hp V8-powered Stingray through the full barrage of Motor Trend’s instrumented tests: 0-60 mph acceleration, quarter mile, 60-0 mph braking, lateral acceleration, and figure-eight. The raw data backs up what Carlos can already feel from the driver’s seat – the 2014 Corvette goes fast, stops quick and handles corners with ease. Then, its off to the winding roads of Central California to see how the C7 Vette’s continuously variable-locking differential, magnetic damping, rev matching and other high-tech features perform in the real world.
