Without a doubt, the Alfa Romeo 4C is the most important Alfa Romeo for decades.

Alfa has spent many years being messed about by successive managements, every one with different half-cooked ideas, then quite a few more. Recently it has had its better-known values attached to B and C-segment hatchbacks – the Mito and Giulietta – because that is where the money is.

Yet no car in recent history has deliberately set out to embody Alfa values. The 8C Competizione helped, of course, but it was really only a concept made good. In truth, it is at least 30 years since Alfa Romeo has built a car for real people that directly and affordably expresses its values. This is the 4C’s mission and it is why it is so very significant – and why this is a must-watch video.

The Ferrari is the most powerful car we’ve ever taken around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with its ferocious 6.3-liter 731 horsepower V-12. The Corvette comes packing the latest version of GM’s venerable small block, a 6.2-liter cam-in-block V-8 that kicks out 460 hp and 465 pound-feet of torque. The Porsche and its relatively tiny 3.8-liter flat-6 might seem out gunned, but remember that for the last two years the 911 has beaten back every BDC challenger we’ve thrown at it. BMW’s M division has lifted the veil of secrecy on the new in-line six-cylinder engine bound for its upcoming M3 saloon and M4 coupé and convertible. The brand has revealed a potent twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre direct-injection petrol unit that produces an official 424bhp at 7500rpm and what officials describe as “significantly more than 369lb ft” of torque. And here, BMW’s DTM stars Timo Glock and Bruno Spengler deliver their verdicts after hot laps of the Nürburgring.
