A Sense of Urgency – Red Bull X-Alps 2011 – Day Ten

Paul Guschlbauer and Martin Muller made an audacious move this morning. They climbed to Refugio Sella on the south side of Neues Weisstor putting them in a perfect position to take the Matterhorn turnpoint. Meanwhile, Toma Coconea maintained his second position, launching over Visp.

All three have now passed the Matterhorn, with Guschlbauer taking a tiger line over big mountains towards Mt Blanc. Race leader Christian Maurer is blazing a trail southwards to Mt Gros. At the time of writing, he was covering up to 50 km an hour, flying at altitudes of 3500 m. Storms are set to develop late in the afternoon.

Right Place Right Time – Red Bull X-Alps 2011 – Day Six

Switzerland’s Christian Maurer has extended his lead in the Red Bull X-Alps race to more than 100km over the Romanian Toma Coconea. Maurer passed the Piz Palü turnpoint in southern Italy today, clocking more than 200km in flight by midday in what seems to be the longest flight yet this event.
But while the two frontrunners seem set to retain their positions for now, its the race for third spot that is heating up. Ferdinand van Schelven, who passed Paul Guschlbauer in a strong flight to gain third place yesterday, had a bad start to the day, landing short of his intended target and being forced to walk up to a 1600m launch again.
Gathering storm clouds threaten to derail his plans today, while behind him Guschlbauer has been making up the lost ground, chased by Thomas de Dorlodot, Michael Gebert and Martin Müller, all within ten kilometers of each other – and the third podium position.
