New Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport review | 2021’s hot Golf tested | Autocar

Volkswagen’s fast Golfs give you a lot of options. This is the Golf GTI Clubsport, which is more than a Golf GTI but less than the range-topping Golf R.

It’s a more powerful and focused Golf but unlike, say, a Honda Civic Type R or Renault Sport Megane, it aims to retain a degree of the Golf’s fabled daily usability.

The Clubsport’s power is up by 59bhp and torque by 22lb ft over a regular GTI, thanks to a different turbo and revised cooling, so it has 296bhp (300hp) and 295lb ft – enough to turn the heads of those considering a Type R or Megane?

Those outputs mean that its 0-62mph time is just 5.6 seconds, while it has a top speed of 155mph. In the UK it costs £37,315. Join us on wet UK roads as we put it to the test.

New BMW M4 Competition review | 2021’s hottest coupe driven | Autocar

The all-new 2021 BMW M4 Competition is the latest hot M-car to be based on BMW’s 4-Series. And it’s a stonker. It has some 503bhp (510hp) from that most notable of BMW powertrains – a straight-six cylinder petrol engine, here 3.0-litres in size and with two single scroll turbos.

It drives the back wheels only (although a 4wd version will be available in the summer) via an eight-speed auto and a limited-slip differential, and even comes with a M Drift Analyser to score how well you’ve oversteered (we have a video on the channel of an M3 vs an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio where you can see it in action).

Performance is mega. The M4 can go from 0-62mph in just 3.8sec and on to a 180mph top speed (if you tick the M Driver’s Package option). It costs £76,055 in the UK (Rs. 1.36 Cr in India, $74,700 in the USA). Join us as we drive the M4 on British roads.

Jaguar F-Pace SVR 2021 review | Supercharged V8 SUV tested | Autocar

This is the 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR, a just-updated version of Jaguar’s SUV. Jaguar says it’s the only car in its class with a 5.0-litre V8 engine and not only that, it’s a supercharged one too.

That means it makes a hefty 542bhp (550hp) which is enough to propel this 2.1 tonne 4×4 from 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds and to a top speed of 178mph.

It has fierce rivals though, from the likes of Mercedes-AMG, BMW and Audi. But how does this £77,595 F-Pace SVR stack up against them? Join Matt Prior as we test the SVR on some of the roads where it was developed.

New BMW M3 Competition ‘G80’ vs 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio review | Autocar

This is the all-new BMW M3 Competition, 2021’s hottest new super saloon. It packs a 3.0-litre twin turbocharged engine with oodles of power, with some 503bhp (metrically, 510hp) and some 479lb ft on tap. At the moment it’s rear-wheel drive, which is all the better to use its ‘M Drift Analyser’ function (though there will be a 4wd version later).

But the new 2021 M3 is no lightweight, at some 1725kg, which is otherwise known as ‘quite a lot’ for a BMW 3-Series. But still it can get from 0-62mph in 4.2sec and go on to a 180mph top speed (with the optional M Driver’s Package). The car costs from £74,755.

Here it’s up against what is, in our minds, its greatest competitor, the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. We are huge fans of the Alfa, which has no shortage of power itself, with its 2.9-litre V6 making the self same 503bhp (510hp) as the M3 but with a little less torque, of 443lb ft. But then, it has less to carry around, weighing in at 1580kg, a much more palatable figure for a compact executive saloon.

As a result the Giulia Quadrifoglio can get from 0-62mph in just 3.9sec and it has a whopping top speed of 191mph. It costs £67,995.

Which car will our testers prefer, though? Our testers Matt Prior and James Disdale head to Blyton Park circuit in the UK to find out.

New Audi E-tron GT review. Would you have an RS E-tron GT over a Porsche Taycan? | Autocar

This is the new 2021 Audi E-tron GT, Audi’s new electric saloon, which shares loads of its underpinnings with the Porsche Taycan. And it’s tested here in not just one but two versions.

First up, the RS E-tron GT, the 637bhp really quick version of the new battery electric E-tron GT. It costs some £110,950 before options, can crack the 0-62mph sprint in 3.3 seconds and has a range of 283 miles.

Then there’s the (slightly) lesser E-tron GT Quattro, as powerful as a ’60’ Audi according to the Audi configurator and the company’s slightly weird naming system. To you and us, that means it has up to 523bhp and a ‘slower’ 0-62mph time, although that still means 4.1 seconds. Its range, though, is 298 miles and it costs from £79,800 in the UK. Although that only gets you a white car with no options, so you’ll add to that in no time.

Here’s what they’re like. Can cars which share so much with the Porsche feel that different to the Taycan? Or could they even be better than the Porsche?

Toyota GR Supra 2.0 2021 review | Are four cylinders enough? | Autocar

This is the new 2021 Toyota Supra 2.0. Cheaper and less powerful than the 3.0-litre (obviously), it’s an entry-level Supra that has four rather than six cylinders. Gulp. Is that enough for a muscly grand touring sports car?

The Supra 2.0 has 254bhp, which is good for a 0-62mph time of 5.2sec and a limited top speed of 155mph. The price is £45,995 rather than the 3.0’s other side of £50,000.

The main good news though is that it’s almost 100kg lighter than the bigger-engined Supra, at 1395kg. And a lighter car is usually good for vehicle handling. Is that the case here? Or does a coupe like the Supra really need six cylinders?

Audi e-tron Sportback vs Jaguar i-Pace vs Mercedes EQC review | Luxury SUVs head-to-head | Autocar

The Jaguar i-Pace is a pioneering EV premium SUV that points the way to the brand’s all-electric future. As sharp to drive as it is to look at, it’s one of our favourite electric cars. Yet amazingly it’s three years old now, so Jag has treated it to a mid-life facelift.

To find out whether these updates are enough for the Jag to remain top of the class, we pitch it against two new rivals from equally established brands – the Audi e-tron Sportback 55 quattro and Mercedes EQC400.

There are some new charging modes and updated infotainment, but under the skin the i-Pace remains largely the same, which means it gets two electric motors that deliver 396bhp, a 0-62mph sprint of 4.8 seconds and a claimed range of 292 miles. Prices start at £65,195, but here we test the £69,795 SE with few optional extras.

Audi’s e-tron is available as both a sensible SUV and a sleeker coupe-inspired Sportback, as tested here. You can get behind the wheel for £69,850, but our more powerful 402bhp 55 S line costs a hefty £79,185. Fitted with a large 95kWh battery it promises 241 miles between charges and a 5.7 seconds dash from standstill to 62mph.

Completing our trio of battery-powered SUVs is the Mercedes EQC400, which starts at £65,720, but weighs in at £74,610 in the AMG-Line Premium Plus tested here. It packs the same 402bhp from its two motors as the Audi, but a lower kerb weight means a just 5.1 seconds is needed for the 0-62mph dash, while you can squeeze a claimed 255 miles out of a single charge.

All three of our talented contenders are proof that EVs should be taken seriously, but is the Jaguar still the cream of the crop? Watch our video as we reveal the winner.

New Toyota GR Yaris v Nissan GT-R Nismo review | On-track giant killing? | Autocar

The 2021 Toyota GR Yaris is the hot hatch hero of its generation. This 257bhp hot-shoe is one of our favourite cars of the moment, priced at only £33,495 (including a Circuit Pack) but capable of 0-62mph in 5.5sec and with a top speed of 143mph.

But we wondered, given it has a bespoke four-wheel drive system, just how capable it was in lousy conditions. So we arranged it to meet with another four-wheel drive performance car, the 2021 Nissan GT-R Nismo, in very cold, very wet and quite foggy conditions.

The two cars are quite different. The Toyota is small and, relatively, affordable and modestly powered. The GT-R Nismo, meanwhile, has 592bhp, a 196mph top speed, can go from 0-62mph in 2.8sec and costs some £180,095.

On track together, though, how different will their driving characteristics, capabilities and lap times prove? Join Matt Prior as we find out.
