People may remember that Shane Black was a co-star in the original 1987 Predator film and in 2018, he’s now directed his own movie about the supreme hunters. The film is chock-full of references not only to that original film but the franchise as a whole, Black’s earlier work and even the Alien Vs Predator film, which sees the Xenomorph spear from that film make an appearance. The film also makes use of that film’s correct terminology of calling the alien a “hunter” as oppose to a “predator”. The film has some fun callbacks to the classic lines, such as “get to the chopper”, “what am I doing here” and “you’re one ugly…”. A high school in the movie has an amazing callback to the cult classic film “The Warriors” while a line of dialogue is taken directly from Black’s “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”. The film has a weird thing in common with every Predator film to date and it has to do with numbers and also makes references to the years that Predator 1 and 2 came out. There’s visual references too, such as the hanged men and the Predator walking through the lake, and there’s a character who seemingly has a direct reference to Gary Busey’s character in Predator 2. Whoopi Goldberg gets a hilarious shoutout and the film pays homage to the special effects and creature designer on the film. There’s also a blink and you’ll miss it reference to a video game, which may have had some inspiration on the plot of the film as it is eerily similar.
