New York City winters are bitterly cold, windy, and long. The many feet of snow, and subsequent “ice melt” chemicals that accumulate on the streets each season cause the sidewalk cracks and rough ground that define skateboarding in the Big Apple.

These less than perfect conditions have been combatted by some of the most creative skateboarders in the industry. These solutions keep NYC skating year-round in indoor DIY spots and skateparks that may or may not have gone through the usual stringent city permit process. This piece goes through the best known spots and the key folks that made “Skate Night” parties in NYC a possibility year after year, spot after spot.
