يُقال أن بإستطاعة كارثة طبيعية واحدة أن تُبيد أُمّة بكاملها، وهذا ما حدث بالفعل في العديد من بقاع الأرض على مدى القرون الماضية. ولكن معظم الكوارث الطبيعية المدمرة حدثت منذ زمن بعيد ويصعب تحديد عدد ضحاياها ومعظم الأرقام الموجودة هي تقديرية فقط.
