Another twist in the Fifa tale, as bidding for the right to host the 2026 World Cup was suspended today, in the wake of the FBI corruption inquiry.

The announcement was made by Fifa’s Secretary General Jerome Valcke at a news conference in Russia.

He maintained, however, that preparations were on track for the 2018 tournament there. It’s also emerged today that an extraordinary meeting of the Fifa executive would be held in July to launch the contest to succeed Sepp Blatter as Fifa president, with the result expected in mid-December.

Mark Carney, the governor of the Bank of England, has announced looming harsher sentences for bankers guilty of market abuse in the UK.

The maximum sentences for those found guilty of market abuse should be extended to 10 years from seven years and more kinds of abuse should be subject to criminal charges, according to the bank’s “fair and effective markets review,” commissioned by Carney and published on Wednesday.

British oil company Soco International paid off an army officer accused of silencing critics of exploration in Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park, an NGO alleges.

Global Witness published scans of four cheques totalling $15,600 (14,000 euros) allegedly issued by Soco’s Congolese subsidiary to the major posted to the park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to many of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas.

The British NGO also published what it said was a receipt for the cheques signed by the officer on May 15, 2014, along with another dated April 30, 2014, confirming he had received $26,650 (24,000 euros).

In a statement SOCO said they “strongly refute any suggestion that this funding was in any way improper or connected with alleged acts of intimidation or violence.“
