There were 596 reported hospital deaths in the UK over the last day.

We often see a lag on the weekend – but that is the lowest figure for nearly two weeks.

If we look at how UK figures compare to other countries – we are still largely following the same trajectory as Italy and France.

The focus has been on what Britain was doing much earlier in the outbreak – well before lockdown – at a time when it seemed the virus was mainly a Chinese problem.

When Ben McCafferty was admitted to hospital with symptoms of coronavirus, his family were told to expect the worst and that he might have just 24 hours to live.

But after two weeks in hospital, Ben – who has Down’s Syndrome – has made a full recovery and has been discharged.

This weekend Belgium became the latest European nation to lift some of the restrictions designed to stop the spread of COVID-19.

DIY and gardening stores were allowed to open their doors for the first time in a month.
