Exclusive: Chinese state ‘likely’ linked to cyber spies

A cyber spy group “likely” linked to the Chinese state has targeted human rights campaigners working on issues about the country for up to five years, a new report claims.

Secureworks says the campaign to monitor and steal files from a number of NGOs started as far back as 2014.

One of the alleged targets is understood to be a human rights group that has raised concerns about the treatment of hundreds of thousands of Uighur and other Muslim minorities in China. It has also written about pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong.

Thousands flee Syria’s rebel-held Idlib province

Almost a quarter of a million people have fled their homes in Syria’s rebel-held Idlib region after the government intensified its attacks.

Idlib is the last major region held by rebels opposed to Syria’s President Assad.

The President’s forces, supported by Russia, have been bombing it since late November despite a ceasefire agreed in September by the leaders of Turkey, Russia and Iran.

The fighting intensified in December – and now hundreds of thousands of people are leaving their homes for cities and camps in northern Idlib and Aleppo province.
