Way back in 2002, Darren Berrecloth was an up-and-coming rider with something to prove — the rookie Claw wanted to compete in Red Bull Rampage. When he approached organizers for permission, they were impressed with his skill but had to make sure the crossover BMX rider had what it takes to ride Rampage’s insanely steep and exposed mountain terrain.

There was one local trail they could take him on to test his mettle: King Kong. So event organizer Todd Barber and Claw went for a little ride … Of course, the rest is history — Claw passed the test and ended up placing third in his first ever Rampage.

Darren Berrecloth almost single-handedly changed the direction of freeride mountain biking when he showed up at Red Bull Rampage in 2002. The Claw’s ability to fuse BMX style tricks into big mountain lines showed the rest of us what was possible, and gave us all insight into the future of freeride mountain biking.

But, it hasn’t always been big drops and shredding gnarly trails. The rigged frame and lack of suspension in the early mountain bikes made it difficult do much more than go straight. Over the years, the evolution of the modern mountain bike has opened the doors to a vast landscape of new terrain, and the progression of the sport has been unstoppable since.

To celebrate the evolution of the cycle, Darren Berrecloth shreds some of BC’s finest and explains why he fell in love with going really fast down a mountain on two wheels.
