As you might expect, snakes with more than one head are quite rare. But it sure looked like a two-headed serpent to Luján Eroles of Santa Fe, Argentina, as she observed the little beast in her garden. A new testing device may lead to better medical treatment for women. Called EVATAR—a portmanteau of Eve and avatar—the machine is a miniature version of the female reproductive system, with actual human tissue in an artificial liquid medium. Female human body chemistry is different from that of males, but historically, medical testing has failed to investigate how treatment outcomes can be different based on sex. The default for pharmaceutical trials has been to use male physiology, a practice that has sometimes led to bad or even disastrous results after a drug is approved. One advantage of EVATAR is that it can simulate the entire menstrual cycle with the appropriate changes in chemistry.
