Creating Objects That Build Themselves | Nat Geo Live

What if, in the future, a chair could morph its shape to fit your own unique body so it is truly comfortable? National Geographic Emerging Explorer Skylar Tibbits just might be able to make this a reality. As the director of the Self-Assembly Lab at MIT, Tibbits is taking 3-D printing to a whole new level by adding a fourth dimension, the element of time. Through 4-D printing, Tibbits is developing ways to program materials so they can build themselves or change shape over time, which will allow us to reinvent products and construction in the future.

One “monstah” bluefin can be worth more than $20,000, and with that kind of money on the line, every captain is fighting to be the best in the fleet.

Our Rivers Are Drying Up. Here’s How You Can Help | National Geographic

The Colorado River—the same river that carved the Grand Canyon—doesn’t even make it to the sea anymore. And it’s not just the Colorado: The Nile, the Ganges, the Rio Grande, and other rivers both big and small are so overtapped they’re often reduced to just a trickle.
The good news is that we can fix this. Pledge to conserve water by texting RIVER to 77177.  Corporate sponsors underwrite your pledges and fund water restoration projects throughout North America. Then, Change the Course uses this funding to work with conservation organizations on projects that restore water to rivers and wetlands. To learn more, visit changethecourse.us.

Meet the Giant Cave-Dwelling Tortoises of the Seychelles | National Geographic

Giant tortoises on Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles have their own way to keep cool: They rest in caves. Tortoises have been observed seeking shade under trees and bushes, but this is the first time people have recorded large groups of tortoises sheltering in caves to escape the heat. Caves help the tortoises survive on this coral island, where temperatures can reach up to 109 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius).
