Memories of a three-week railway journey through Japan developed into a fascinating short film. Filmmakers Vincent Urban, Alex Schiller, and Alex Tank zoomed through Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Kyoto and experienced a culture that somehow balances rich tradition with a very futuristic present.

Electric eels leap from the water to deliver a more powerful shock to an animal they perceive to be a threat, according to research by Vanderbilt University biologist Kenneth Catania. Video footage demonstrates the defensive behavior in slow motion with the aid of an artificial arm and prop crocodile head outfitted with LEDs. This study confirms a claim made in 1800 by the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt.

Alepotrypa Cave in southern Greece was likely used by some of the earliest farmers in Europe as a place to bury the dead. Some also suggest it was the mythical entrance to Hades, the Greek underworld. More than 150 bodies have been found in the cave, and researchers continue to find more. The site also gives a rare look at the Neolithic period, when humans first began to give up hunting and gathering and settle into farming communities. Published June 8, 2016.
